A man and woman who have been married for as long as sixty-nine years have died within minutes of each other.
Isaac Vatkin was holding onto his wife Teresa’s hand as she passed away at 12.10am on Saturday after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for years.
The 91-year-old sat and held on to his 89-year-old wife in Highland Park Hospital in Skokie, Illinois, for the next 40 minutes.
And as a family member separated their entwined fingers at 12.50am, Issac himself passed away.
The couple’s son, Leo Vatkin, said his father ‘never wanted to do anything apart’ from his wife.
Their grandson William Vatkin said: ‘You didn’t want to see them go, but you couldn’t ask for anything more.’
The Vatkins met in their native Argentina, and eventually they married and moved to Skokie.
During a joint funeral held Monday for the couple, their daughter, Clara Gesklin said her parents’
‘love for each other was so strong they simply could not live without each other.’
Earlier this month, another couple who were married for 77 years died on the same day after holding hands for the last time.
Staff at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, Kent, moved Frank Dodd’s bed to his wife Joyce’s ward days after their 77th anniversary.
As the couple from nearby Gravesend lay side by side, they held hands for the last time.
Frank, 96, died on Saturday April 8 at 4am. Joyce, 97, died at 6pm.
